Ambition

The gap between innovation and understanding

Wageningen University & Research is a global leader in sustainable food packaging science. Our researchers develop edible coatings from coffee by-products that extend food shelf life. They engineer biobased barrier films from nanocellulose that block UV light and oxygen. They build physics-based digital twins that predict how packaging choices affect food quality across entire supply chains. But almost none of this reaches the people who need it most. Consumers care deeply about sustainability, yet misconceptions often shape their choices more than science does.
Research consistently shows that most people struggle to distinguish "biodegradable" from "compostable" and many would dispose of compostable packaging in ways that prevent it from breaking down.
At the same time, studies across Europe have found that a significant share of sustainability claims on packaging are vague, unverified, or misleading, and social media amplifies these messages far faster than fact checking can correct them. Meanwhile, promising innovations sit in laboratories because industry decision-makers lack first-hand exposure to them, and municipal policymakers design waste regulations without evidence-based input from the researchers developing new materials. SPOTLIGHT exists to close these gaps: not with lectures, but with tangible experiences that let people test, touch, sort, and question sustainable packaging for themselves.

Objectives

What we aim to achieve

SPOTLIGHT is built around four interconnected objectives:

1st Objective
Public understanding: Showcase Wageningen’s food packaging innovations to public and young people through hands-on experiences. When visitors test an edible coating or feel the difference between a biobased and a fossil-based film, packaging science becomes real, not abstract.

2nd Objective
Behaviour change: Correct the most widespread myths about packaging and prompt better everyday choices. Our myth-busting content is grounded in peer-reviewed Wageningen research and translated into simple, actionable practices: which bin, which label, which material actually makes a difference.

3rd Objective
Technology transfer: Demonstrate biobased processing and generate concrete adoption leads with industry. Through pilot-plant tours at the Wageningen Biobased Innovation Plant (BPIP), matchmaking sessions, and industry webinars, we connect company needs directly to Wageningen expertise.

4th Objective
Network building: Strengthen and sustain connections between Wageningen, national networks, schools, municipalities, and industry. By partnering with M2i (MaterialsNL) and WFBR, SPOTLIGHT builds a recurring pipeline of events, content, and collaborations that outlasts the project itself.

Approach

How we do it: three activity streams

Activity 1: Interactive Zones “Lab Meets Life”

Visitors engage directly with Wageningen innovations: testing foods coated with edible films, feeling the difference between biobased and fossil-based plastics, and observing composting and biodegradability demonstrations in real time. Each demonstration follows a “with vs. without” format so that the impact of packaging innovation is immediately visible and measurable. The programme is modular and mobile, designed for WUR open days, national science festivals, school visits, and community events.

Activity 2: My Packaging Story: Myths, Facts & Better Practices

A digital platform that collects people’s beliefs and questions about packaging, then contrasts them with Wageningen science. Features include:
•  Myth vs. Fact cards each card tackles one common misconception with a WUR-sourced fact and a practical action anyone can take.
•  Ask-a-Scientist visitors submit questions and vote on what they want answered. Top-voted questions receive a short video response from a Wageningen researcher each month.
•  Green Plastic Challenge an open competition where students submit packaging redesign ideas. Public voting combined with a WUR/M2i/WFBR jury selects winners, announced at events e.g. MaterialenNL.  •  Downloadable school kits materials, sorting games, and short videos formatted for classroom use.All content is bilingual (Dutch/English), GDPR-compliant, and accessible.

Activity 3: Mini Science Talks & Industry Engagement

Five-to-seven-minute TED-style talks by Wageningen researchers highlight key challenges and solutions in sustainable food packaging. For industry audiences, we offer guided tours of the Wageningen Biobased Innovation Plant (BPIP), targeted webinars for decision-makers, and a “problem intake” pathway that matches company needs with WUR technologies and expertise.
